Heart Rate Monitors to aid in Weight Loss

When approaching a weight loss program, it is very important that you understand your heart rate training zones in order to train properly for accurate results. A Heart Rate Monitor will keep you in a safe yet effective training regimen based on your fitness level and goals. Heart Rate (HR) zone training is also a systematic method of improving your cardiovascular system. Basically, there are two ways to determine your proper training zones. One of the most common ways to estimate your training zones is by using this simple formula: (220 – your age). This method does not take into account your fitness level or genetic background, which can make your true maximum heart rate 10 to 20 beats per minute higher or lower than the age-predicted number.

This formula will determine an average Maximum Heart Rate which will indicate the most challenging training zone for your age. Continue reading

Sunday Fun Day

I must admit after a stressful week of uncertainty and hard work, I had to get out and really enjoy the weekend! This weekend has helped me to slow down and count my blessings. The feeling I get when I’m on the beach is unexplainable. The sense of fulfillment in my heart I feel each time I do something I enjoy is beyond this earth. Each time I play in the fields and waters of the universe, I fall in love over and over again! I am ready to close this week and make this next week even better!! Happy February everyone!

On-the go kind of gal

Many of my students have asked me what do I normally have for lunch. That’s a great question considering how my lifestyle has drastically changed in the past few months. Before I became very busy and constantly on the road, I used to have more time to prepare home meals such as vegetable salads, guacamole dishes, cucumber snacks, homemade sandwiches, and awesome smoothies. But now, I find myself constantly from place to place and barely home. So, on a day when I would not have time to run home to prepare a meal or have any meals prepared, I would typically look for a vegan/vegetarian restaurant that I can trust. For example, this vegan-friendly café in Allapattah Smart Bites.  Unlike all the Fast Food Restaurants surrounding the Medical Campus, Smart Bites is located on 20th street across from the Miami-Dade Community College. Thank heaven for this hidden gem nearby. Continue reading

Recombinant bovine growth hormone in Animals

Recombinant bovine growth hormone, also known as rBGH or rBST, is injected into cows to make them produce more milk. This practice, which is known to cause harm to cows and may pose harm to humans, is banned in Canada, Japan, Australia, and all 25 countries of the European Union.

RBGH causes udder infections in cows, which are treated with antibiotics. Increased antibiotic use in food animals is a serious problem because it creates antibiotic resistant bacteria and is strongly linked to human infections that are difficult to treat. Injections of rBGH also increase another hormone, called IGF-1, in the cow and the cow‚ milk. Too much IGF-1 in humans is linked with increased rates of colon, breast, and prostate cancer. While it’s not certain that rBGH given to cows significantly increases IGF-1 in humans, why take the chance? Continue reading
